Someone should tell Netflix that movies existed before 1970. The truth is, you won’t find many in the classic movie category on Netflix. Instead, Netflix only has a handful of classic films from the ’70s and ’80s, many of which will soon be leaving. Specifically, The Blues Brothers, Chinatown, The Great Gatsby, and Beverly Hills Cop are all set to depart starting March 31st. The good news is that Netflix has added some other classic films, including The ‘Burbs, Animal House, Legal Eagles, and Out of Africa. It’s a good mix of comedy, with a touch of drama and romance. So keep reading for the rest of our picks for the best classic films on Netflix right now. Just because a film is old doesn’t mean it can’t entertain. The ‘Burbs (1989) Universal Pictures Tom Hanks (Saving Private Ryan) and Carrie Fisher play a married couple, Ray and Carol Peterson in The ‘Burbs, an ’80s cult comedy. Ray is an average guy who considers himself a good neighbor, but he immediately becomes suspicious when the Klopek family moves in next door. Ray doesn’t know what to make of Dr. Werner Klopek (Henry Gibson), Uncle Reuben Klopek (Brother Theodore), and Hans Klopek (Courtney Gains), or their strange and unsettling behavior. When Ray’s elderly neighbor, Walter Seznick (Gale Gordon), goes missing, he becomes convinced that the Klopeks have killed him. Much to Carol’s annoyance, Ray insists on searching for Walter’s body in the Klopek family’s house. But Ray isn’t prepared for what he’ll actually find. Watch The ‘Burbs on Netflix. Animal House (1978) Universal Pictures For a film released in 1978, Animal House is still pretty wild even by today’s standards. The late John Belushi has one of his funniest performances as John “Bluto” Blutarsky, one of the leaders of Delta House, a rowdy fraternity at Faber College in the early ’60s. Bluto, Eric “Otter” Stratton (Tim Matheson), and Donald “Boon” Schoenstein (Peter Riegert) welcome new recruits Larry “Pinto” Kroger (Tom Hulce) and Kent “Flounder” Dorfman (Stephen Furst) as they get their first taste of college life. Delta House’s antics have already made them the hated targets of Dean Vernon Wormer (John Vernon), and he’ll stop at nothing to get them kicked out of school. Hilariously, the Delta House boys do more to help take down the Dean and his Omega House lackeys. And Delta House isn’t willing to receive a public reward from the Dean or the Omegas. Watch Animal House on Netflix. Legal Eagles (1986) Universal Pictures Would you believe it? Legal Eagles was Ivan Reitman’s first film after Ghostbusters? It’s true. Reitman cast Robert Redford in the role of Tom Logan, an up-and-coming star in the district attorney’s office who wants to become the district attorney himself. Tom’s career aspirations are put on hold when he clashes with Laura Kelly (Debra Winger), a defense lawyer representing a woman named Chelsea Deardon (Daryl Hannah) against theft charges. Chelsea is trying to recover her late father’s art, who was a famous painter. And even after the initial charges against Chelsea are dropped, she will soon face a murder charge. With his legal career at stake, Tom teams up with Laura to clear Chelsea’s name even as sparks fly between them. Watch Legal Eagles on Netflix. Out of Africa (1985) Universal Pictures Someone at Netflix really loves Robert Redford as he appears in many of the streamer’s classic films. Out of Africa casts Redford as Denys Finch Hatton, a great game hunter who captures the heart of Baroness Karen von Dinesen (Meryl Streep). The film itself is based on von Dinesen’s autobiographical story, who wrote the novel Out of Africa under her pen name, Isak Dinesen. Karen moved to Africa to secure a future by marrying Baron Bror von Blixen (Klaus Maria Brandauer). But when their relationship cools, Karen turns to Denys for all the passion she can’t receive from her husband. However, even as Karen will be free from the bonds of marriage, maintaining a long-term romantic bond with Denys may not be possible. Watch Out of Africa on Netflix. The Blues Brothers (1980) Universal Pictures If you want to blame something for the string of movies based on Saturday Night Live sketches, then you have to start with The Blues Brothers. But this also seems to be the best SNL-related film ever made. John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd, two of the original Not Ready For Prime Time Players, star in the film as “Joliet” Jake Blues and his brother, Elwood Blues. After Jake is released from prison, the Blues Brothers discover that the orphanage where they grew up is set to be shut down due to back taxes. Soon after, Jake has an epiphany, and the brothers embark on a self-proclaimed “mission from God” to raise funds to save the orphanage. First, they have to get their band back together, survive the wrath of Jake’s ex-girlfriend (Carrie Fisher), and evade the police, angry rednecks, and even Illinois Nazis. Watch The Blues Brothers on Netflix. Chinatown (1974) Paramount Pictures It’s not an exaggeration to say that Chinatown is one of the greatest films ever made. Jack Nicholson stars in the film as private investigator J.J. “Jake” Gittes. After Jake is duped into taking photographs of Hollis I. Mulwray (Darrell Zwerling) that tarnish his reputation, he is confronted by Hollis’ widow, Evelyn Cross Mulwray (Faye Dunaway). Through Evelyn, Jake realizes that there is more to Hollis’ death than just a simple double-cross. Evelyn’s father, Noah Cross (John Huston), offers to pay Jake to find Katherine (Belinda Palmer), the woman everyone assumes was Hollis’ mistress. The discovery of the truth about Katherine’s identity and why Evelyn is desperate to protect her is one of the most famous scenes in cinema history. The Great Gatsby (1974) Paramount Pictures Director Francis Ford Coppola penned the third cinematic adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s beloved novel The Great Gatsby, which is on Netflix alongside Baz Luhrmann’s more recent adaptation (starring Elvis). Robert Redford plays Jay Gatsby, an enigmatic millionaire obsessed with his lost love, Daisy Buchanan (Mia Farrow). Unfortunately for Gatsby, Daisy is married to Tom Buchanan (Bruce Dern), a man who is already cheating on her. To get close to Daisy, Gatsby befriends her cousin, Nick Carraway (Sam Waterston), who soon becomes embroiled in Gatsby’s lavish parties. Gatsby’s wealth can buy him almost everything he wants, except the one thing he needs from Daisy. It’s a timeless story, and that’s why this film endures. Watch The Great Gatsby on Netflix. Beverly Hills Cop (1984) Paramount Pictures Eddie Murphy has never been just an action star. Coming off his iconic run as a cast member of Saturday Night Live, Beverly Hills Cop was the action comedy that propelled Murphy to leading man status and Hollywood’s A-list. Murphy plays Axel Foley, a Detroit police detective driven to solve the murder of his friend, Michael “Mikey” Tandino (James Russo). Foley defies orders to stay out of the investigation and tracks Mikey’s killers all the way to Beverly Hills. The Los Angeles Police Department doesn’t want to get involved in Foley’s vendetta, so they assign Detective William “Billy” Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) and Sergeant John Taggart (John Ashton) to keep him out of trouble.
